SpaceX IPO Sparks Interest Among European Retail Investors

European retail investors are showing a strong interest in the upcoming SpaceX initial public offering (IPO), which is set to allocate a substantial 30% of its shares to individual investors. This move is particularly noteworthy as it marks one of the largest retail tranches in recent history, with offerings planned across several European countries including the UK, Germany, and France.

Retail Investors Eager but Cautious

In the UK, eight online investing platforms have started inviting customers to apply for shares in what is being described as a $75 billion raise. This IPO is seen as a significant opportunity to invigorate the UK’s retail investing culture, which has been relatively subdued since the flotation of Royal Mail in 2013. Ygal El Harrar, BNP Paribas’ global head of equity capital markets, noted the unprecedented level of interest from retail investors who are eager to be part of SpaceX’s ambitious vision.

Despite the excitement, some experts are advising caution. The lofty $1.75 trillion valuation of SpaceX, a company currently operating at a loss, raises concerns. Additionally, the small float size of less than 5% and the lack of voting rights for retail investors could pose significant risks. Meziane Lasfer, a finance professor at Bayes Business School, highlighted the challenges retail investors face compared to institutional investors who have access to extensive financial analysis tools.

Mixed Reactions and Regulatory Implications

Opinions on investment forums are divided, with some investors enthusiastic about the potential of SpaceX, while others are wary of the high valuation and Elon Musk’s leadership style. Platforms like Hargreaves Lansdown have reported significant interest, with 35,000 clients registering for IPO alerts.

There is also a regulatory push in the UK to make IPOs more accessible to retail investors, although the number of deals available has been limited due to a global slowdown in new listings. The approach taken by SpaceX could set a precedent for future IPOs, encouraging more foreign firms to target UK retail investors.

As the IPO approaches, retail investors are advised to carefully consider the risks and rewards of investing in a company like SpaceX, which, despite its ambitious goals, presents a complex investment landscape.
