South Valley bridge replacement project narrows lanes, urges caution

The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced that crews will start construction on the Rio Bravo Bridge segment of Rio Bravo Boulevard in the South Valley this week. Work begins Monday, Sept. 14, and runs each night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, Sept. 18.

What the project entails

The effort is part of a larger bridge‑replacement program aimed at improving the crossing over the Rio Grande and strengthening the connection between the South Valley and Interstate 25. During the nightly work window, both eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane, creating a temporary bottleneck on a key thoroughfare.

Impact on drivers

Motorists traveling on Rio Bravo Boulevard should expect slower travel times and possible delays. The Department of Transportation urges drivers to obey posted speed limits, stay alert, and keep mobile devices out of sight while in the construction zone. Those who can safely reroute are encouraged to use alternate streets such as Second Street or Isleta Boulevard to avoid congestion.

Safety reminders

Construction crews will be working in close proximity to traffic, so safety remains a top priority. The department asks drivers to maintain a safe following distance, use turn signals when changing lanes, and be prepared for sudden stops. Law enforcement will be present to enforce traffic regulations and protect both workers and motorists.

Where to find updates

For the latest road conditions, closures, and detour information, residents can visit nmroads.com. The site provides real‑time updates and maps that can help commuters plan their trips during the construction period.

Looking ahead

Once the temporary lane reductions are lifted, the new bridge structure will offer a more reliable crossing over the Rio Grande, supporting increased traffic flow and enhancing safety for the South Valley community. The project reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to modernizing critical infrastructure and fostering stronger connections between neighborhoods and major highways.

Residents are thanked for their patience and cooperation as the Department of Transportation works to complete the project efficiently and with minimal disruption.
