On Saturday afternoon a fire broke out in the 3300 block of South Westshore Boulevard, just south of Leona Street in South Tampa. Faulty wiring is believed to have ignited the blaze that completely gutted the offices of Anna Lucia Events and sent thick smoke into the adjoining establishments Wise Women Fitness and Salon T Mackay.
Impact on local businesses
Anna Lucia Richardson, owner of Anna Lucia Events, says her company can continue operating remotely while she searches for a new physical space. She expressed deep concern for the employees of Wise Women Fitness and Salon T Mackay, both of which suffered extensive smoke damage despite escaping the flames.
Wise Women Fitness, a gym that primarily serves women over 50, was hit hard. Owner Lynn Valaes told us she has only recently regained more than half of the clientele lost after the 2024 hurricanes that battered the area. “We provide a safe sanctuary for older ladies,” Valaes said. “Without this space, I don’t know what we’re going to do.”
Owners call for community assistance
Richardson urged local residents and businesses to step up and help the affected owners find temporary space, cover some of the repair costs, and keep their client bases intact. “If we could help them find some temporary space, alleviate some of these costs for them, and keep their clientele in a good situation, it would make a huge difference,” she said.
Both Wise Women Fitness and Salon T Mackay anticipate that full repairs will take more than six months. Richardson plans to keep offering virtual appointments for her event‑planning services until a new location is secured.
Fire investigation and safety reminder
Fire officials have not yet released an official cause report, but the business owners’ observations point to faulty wiring as the likely trigger. The quick response of a salon employee who called 911 is credited with preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.
Local fire departments remind property owners to have electrical systems inspected regularly, especially after severe weather events that can stress wiring and other infrastructure.
Looking ahead
The South Tampa community has a history of rallying around small businesses after natural disasters. Residents are encouraged to support the recovering owners by patronizing their services, donating supplies, or offering temporary workspace when possible. As the repairs progress, the owners remain hopeful that the businesses will emerge stronger and continue to serve the neighborhood.
