Review: Na Hong‑jin’s ‘Hope’ Delivers a Wild, Overlong Korean Sci‑Fi Spectacle

Director Na Hong‑jin, known for high‑octane chase pictures such as The Chaser and The Wailing, makes his most expansive effort yet with ‘Hope’. The film debuted in a slightly different cut at Cannes in May and now arrives in U.S. theaters through Neon.

Plot and Setting

The story unfolds in the border town of Hope Harbor on the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone. Local police chief Bum‑seok (Hwang Jung‑min) investigates a series of mysterious animal attacks. A group of hunters, led by Sung‑ki (Zo In‑Sung), initially suspect a tiger that has slipped through the barbed‑wire fence from the North.

As the investigation deepens, Bum‑seok discovers the threat is far larger—a towering, sinewy alien that alternates between bipedal and quadrupedal movement. The creature’s design, rendered with motion‑capture work by Cameron Britton, feels at times low‑budget, but the film leans into its schlocky charm.

Performances and Action

Hwang Jung‑min delivers a gritty, profanity‑laden performance as the determined chief, while Hoyeon (of Squid Game fame) makes a striking big‑screen debut as officer Sung‑ae, who joins the chase in a high‑speed squad‑car shoot‑out. Their chemistry adds a human anchor to the chaotic pursuit.

The chase sequences dominate the runtime, especially a final open‑road chase that ranks among the year’s most exhilarating set‑pieces. Cinematographer Hong Kyung‑pyo, known for Parasite and Burning, captures the devastation and debris with a keen eye, giving the film a polished visual style despite its budgetary constraints.

Science‑Fiction Elements

Midway through the film, the narrative shifts to the hunters’ trek through the forest, where viewers learn more about the extraterrestrial visitors. Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Taylor Russell appear as the alien’s human counterparts, their faces obscured beneath CGI‑rendered alien skin. Subtitles convey their alien dialogue, expanding the film’s empathy beyond the human perspective.

Na’s willingness to explore the alien’s viewpoint adds a philosophical layer, suggesting a cross‑species empathy that is rare in monster movies. However, the film’s pacing suffers from lengthy digressions, such as a chain‑saw‑assisted autopsy of the creature and a comedic, if unsettling, eyewitness account involving a villager’s nervous bathroom break.

Production and Reception

Reportedly the most expensive Korean film ever produced, Hope took two years of post‑production work before its Cannes premiere. The film’s runtime of 156 minutes pushes the limits of audience endurance, and the CGI, while ambitious, does not always meet award‑winning standards.

Neon has rated the movie R for strong bloody violence and language. It will run in U.S. theaters starting Friday, with English subtitles provided for the Korean dialogue.

Final Verdict

‘Hope’ is a bold, if uneven, entry in Na Hong‑jin’s filmography. Fans of large‑scale Korean thrillers will appreciate the relentless chase and the occasional moments of unexpected humanity. Viewers seeking a tightly edited, effects‑driven monster movie may find the length and occasional CGI shortcomings a disappointment. Still, the film’s ambition and its willingness to blend genre conventions make it a noteworthy addition to the year’s cinematic lineup.
