South Chicago – As SkyART approaches its 25th anniversary, the nonprofit is preparing a major expansion of its 3026 E. 91st St. campus. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded the organization a $2.5 million grant, the largest it has ever received, to fund new studio, storage and therapeutic spaces.
Grant details and planned construction
Executive director Devon VanHouten‑Maldonado said the funds will be used for either a new addition on a lot behind the current building or the renovation of a neighboring storefront. The project aims to add roughly 2,000 square feet of flexible studio space, more private therapy rooms, and additional storage for supplies and finished artwork. If the budget allows, SkyART also hopes to enlarge its gallery and create new office space.
Construction is slated to begin later this year, with a target of completing the additions within three years of groundbreaking.
Free arts and mental‑health programming for local youth
SkyART provides free artistic and mental‑health programs to youth and young adults ages 7‑24. Offerings include after‑school art courses, open‑studio time, and a licensed creative‑therapy program that integrates social‑emotional learning. The expansion will enable the organization to serve more children, reduce its current waitlist of about 80 families, and offer greater privacy for therapeutic sessions.
State support and community impact
The grant was secured with assistance from State Senator Robert Peters, whose relationship with SkyART predates his legislative career. Peters praised the nonprofit as a “vital community resource” that offers a safe environment for creative expression on the South Side.
Because the state funding is limited to infrastructure costs, SkyART will continue fundraising for additional teaching artists and operational expenses. VanHouten‑Maldonado emphasized the importance of not becoming overly dependent on government grants, noting that the organization is positioned to sustain growth once the building work is finished.
Looking ahead
SkyART’s expansion comes a year after opening a West Side facility in East Garfield Park and just weeks before a free block party celebrating the organization’s 25th anniversary on September 12. The celebration will take place at SkyART West, 3450 W. Lake St., and will feature music, art activities and opportunities for the community to support the nonprofit’s mission.
With the new grant and planned construction, SkyART aims to broaden access to the arts, strengthen mental‑health resources, and continue its long‑standing role as a cultural anchor for South Chicago families.
