South Korean President Lee’s Justice Minister Nominee Withdraws Amid Personnel Review

Seoul – President Lee Jae Myung’s justice minister nominee, Kim Seung‑won, announced on Saturday that he is withdrawing from consideration. The decision marks the second cabinet nomination to be withdrawn this month, following the recent exit of Yong Hye‑in, who had been slated for the gender‑equality portfolio.

Nominee’s Reasoning and Allegations

Kim told reporters that he did not want to add any burden to President Lee’s administration. He also rejected accusations from a conservative lawmaker who claimed he had lobbied regulators over a drug trial and was involved in financial irregularities. “I gravely accept that I did not meet the public’s expectations, and I will deeply reflect on my shortcomings,” Kim said at a press conference, while firmly denying the allegations.

Administration’s Response

President Lee addressed the situation at a separate press briefing on Friday, acknowledging shortcomings in the administration’s vetting of cabinet nominees. “We are currently working to reexamine our personnel system,” he said, emphasizing a commitment to improve the selection process and restore public confidence.

Poll Numbers Show Declining Approval

A Gallup Korea poll released on Friday placed President Lee’s public approval at 37 percent, the lowest level since he took office in June 2025. The poll’s findings have been linked in part to criticism over recent personnel appointments, including the two recent withdrawals.

Implications for Lee’s Cabinet Reshuffle

The withdrawals come as President Lee continues a broader cabinet reshuffle that began in late August. The administration’s willingness to reassess its nomination procedures may help mitigate the political fallout and stabilize its standing with the electorate.

What Comes Next?

Lee’s team has indicated that a new candidate for the justice ministry will be identified after a more rigorous review. Observers will be watching closely to see whether the revised process can produce a nominee who both satisfies the president’s policy goals and gains broader public acceptance.
