South Korea’s exports are expected to have risen 59.0% in July from a year earlier, according to a Reuters poll. This growth is driven by surging demand for AI chips from companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
Chip Demand Drives Growth
The export gains are largely due to the increase in semiconductor prices, with shipment volumes rising more modestly. In the first 20 days of July, exports rose 52.3% from a year earlier, with semiconductor shipments jumping 180.6%.
The survey also tipped imports to rise 26.6% in July from a year earlier, after rising 30.0% in June. The monthly trade surplus was forecast at a median $29.59 billion, compared with $36.09 billion in the previous month.
