South Florida Billionaires Establish Private Schools for Diverse Education

In South Florida, a new wave of private schools is emerging, spearheaded by billionaires who are committed to expanding educational choices. One such entrepreneur, John Marshall, has taken the initiative to establish BaseCamp305 in Miami Beach. Marshall, who moved to the area in 2014, was motivated by the desire to provide a unique educational experience for his daughters and other children in the community.

Innovative Education at BaseCamp305

BaseCamp305, which opened its doors in 2019, offers a curriculum centered on entrepreneurship, project-based learning, and technology. Students engage with cutting-edge tools like robots and 3D printers, preparing them for a future where technology plays a crucial role. The school currently serves about 50 students and has plans for expansion to accommodate more grade levels.

Marshall’s vision is part of a broader trend in South Florida, where other wealthy individuals are also investing in private education. In Palm Beach, developer Jeff Greene founded The Greene School, while Stephen Ross plans to open Wingrove Academy in the coming years. Additionally, WeWork co-founder Adam Neumann is working on establishing a private Jewish school in El Portal.

Challenges and Community Impact

Creating a private school is not without its challenges. Marshall notes that securing land and navigating community and city regulations can be difficult. Despite these hurdles, BaseCamp305 has managed to establish two campuses and is in the process of constructing a third location to expand its offerings.

Marshall emphasizes that the motivation behind these ventures is not financial gain but rather the desire to provide diverse educational options. Tuition at BaseCamp305 is set at approximately $30,000 annually, which reflects the school’s commitment to quality education and top-tier faculty. Teachers are selected for their expertise and are compensated generously, with salaries often exceeding $80,000.

As the school continues to grow, Marshall hopes that families will recognize the value of these private education options. He envisions Miami Beach as a world-class destination not only for its beaches and cultural events but also for its educational institutions.
