South Carolina Gubernatorial Candidates Gear Up for Primary

In the lead-up to South Carolina’s gubernatorial primary on June 9, candidates are focusing on their financial strategies to gain an edge. The latest campaign finance disclosures highlight the significant resources some candidates are willing to invest in their bids for the governor’s office.

Financial Strategies in Focus

Three Republican candidates, Congressman Ralph Norman, Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, and businessman Rom Reddy, are leveraging their personal wealth to bolster their campaigns. Norman, a real estate developer, has loaned his campaign a total of $3.75 million, spending nearly $3.8 million in the final pre-election period. Evette, known for her success in a DEI-friendly human resources company, has raised $1.1 million and taken out a $1 million loan, spending $1.5 million recently. Reddy, a Lowcountry businessman, has invested $3.8 million of his own funds, with total spending just over $4 million.

Other candidates, such as Congresswoman Nancy Mace and Attorney General Alan Wilson, are also significant players. Mace raised $360,000 and spent nearly $415,000, while Wilson raised $330,000 and spent $1.63 million. Both maintain substantial cash reserves for the campaign’s final stretch.

Impact of Early Voting

With early voting already underway and breaking records, the candidates are under pressure to effectively allocate their resources to reach voters. A national Republican strategist noted the importance of strategic spending, especially as the pool of undecided voters shrinks.

The outcome of this financial race will be pivotal in determining which candidates can maintain momentum and capture the attention of South Carolina’s electorate as the primary approaches.
