In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Derion Melancon, a high school graduate from Louisiana, experienced the devastation of losing her family home to a fire while she was receiving her diploma. As Derion walked across the stage, her family’s residence was engulfed in flames.
“I feel like nobody will understand the feeling of leaving your home, going to graduate, and coming back to nothing,” Melancon shared with WDSU. The fire, which took nearly two hours to extinguish, left the family with nothing but memories of what once was. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and a family member was able to rescue their grandmother from a nearby home.
Among the lost possessions was Derion’s younger brother Dyce’s kindergarten cap and gown. In a touching display of community support, staff at Garyville/Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School quickly arranged for Dyce to have a new gown and clothes for his graduation.
Community Support and Donations
The local community has stepped up to assist the Melancon family during this difficult time. Donations of food, toys, and clothing have been pouring in, with contributions organized by the My Dreams Foundation, led by St. John Parish Public Schools board member Jennifer Frizzell.
Dr. Kara Lawson, principal of Garyville/Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School, expressed her admiration for Dyce, saying, “We love Dyce and his personality because he brings the light to our school. And children do that – they bring light to school.”
For those wishing to help the family, donations can be made through the school or by visiting the My Dreams Foundation’s website.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, according to the St. John Baptist Fire Department. Despite the loss, the Melancon family’s faith and the community’s support are helping them navigate this challenging time.
