The Saanta Collective, a group of Somali creatives in Minnesota, is reviving traditional Somali dance through a unique performance titled ‘GAAF’. This event, held at the University of Minnesota, aims to reconnect the Somali diaspora with their cultural roots by dramatizing a Gaaf, a traditional Somali wedding afterparty.
Reviving Tradition
Nadira Hussein, along with her siblings and friends, leads this initiative. The performance reimagines the Gaaf with a focus on dance challenges, reflecting a tradition many in Minnesota’s Somali community have not experienced firsthand. Nadira, born in Minneapolis, sees this as a way to engage with her heritage despite the distance from Somalia.
The performance involves a series of ‘judgments’ led by Nadira’s brother, Diin Hussein, who plays the role of a ‘soldier’. These judgments incorporate traditional Somali dances like Jaandheer and Saylici, blending them with narrative elements to create a participatory experience for the audience.
Cultural Connection
Nadira and her creative partner, Maryan Yusuf, both graduate students at the University of Minnesota, have been working on projects that explore Somali dance in contemporary settings. Their collaboration began with workshops and art exhibitions, eventually leading to the formation of the Saanta Collective. ‘GAAF’ is their first major performance as lead directors.
The show is designed to immerse the audience in Somali culture. Patrons are invited to participate as if they were family members at a wedding, with traditional elements like removing shoes at the door and a set designed to mimic a Somali wedding environment.
The performance also draws from the Somali Riwaayad tradition, which emphasizes audience interaction and improvisation. This approach allows the performers to incorporate humor and spontaneity, making each show unique.
Preserving Heritage
Beyond the performance, Nadira and Yusuf are committed to preserving Somali cultural heritage through digital archiving. Their work highlights the importance of cultural expression for Somali-Americans who seek to maintain a connection to their roots.
By bringing ‘GAAF’ to life, the Saanta Collective not only celebrates Somali dance but also fosters a sense of community and belonging among the Somali diaspora in Minnesota.
