San Jose State University (SJSU) is under fire for its handling of allegations against volleyball coach Todd Kress. Attorney John Manly, who represents female athletes in abuse cases, including Simone Biles, is speaking out against the university.
Allegations Against Coach Kress
Manly’s comments come after Fox News Digital reported that SJSU was informed of graphic assault allegations against Kress during the 2024 season. The allegations were made by a former player who claimed Kress attacked her in a hotel room in 1998.
The player’s letter, which was sent to SJSU on October 24, 2024, detailed the alleged incident, including Kress smearing caramel on her face and hair, throwing her on a bed, and holding her down in a bathtub. The player said she was able to escape and ran back to her room, with Kress chasing after her.
University Response
SJSU Athletic Director Jeff Konya responded to the player’s letter, acknowledging receipt of the correspondence and stating that it would be shared with the proper authorities for review. However, Manly has criticized the university’s response, saying that it has not done enough to address the allegations.
Manly has represented SJSU female athletes in a separate case of sexual abuse by a trainer and has seen similarities in the culture behind SJSU’s handling of the volleyball situation. He believes that the university’s handling of the allegations is part of a larger problem with the way it treats female students and athletes.
The university has previously settled with the U.S. Department of Justice over allegations of sexual abuse by a former trainer and has been sued by 11 female players over their experience with a trans athlete on the volleyball team.
