Silent rally planned outside Plymouth courthouse in support of Lindsay Clancy

A silent rally titled “Stand In Peace For Lindsay” is scheduled for Thursday outside the Plymouth District Court. Organizers expect dozens of participants who will stand together in silence, wearing pink, with no signs or chanting.

Local organization and broader reach

The event is being coordinated by the same group that held a silent protest outside the Norfolk Superior Courthouse in Dedham during the Karen Read murder trials. Similar gatherings have been announced in other U.S. cities and even one in the Netherlands, indicating a growing national response.

Trial background

Lindsay Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to the murders of her three children, ages eight months to five years, in January 2023. Prosecutors allege she planned the killings and staged a suicide attempt that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Defense experts, including psychologist Paul Zeizel, contend that Clancy suffered from bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, a rare mental‑health condition affecting roughly one to two per 1,000 women after delivery.

Zeizel testified that Clancy “did not appreciate the wrongfulness of her act” because of her mental disease, but also noted she was capable of everyday tasks such as driving and searching the internet on the day of the killings. The defense argues this does not negate her psychotic state.

Prosecutorial challenges

Prosecutors questioned Zeizel’s objectivity, pointing out his extensive contact with Clancy as a patient and his involvement with the defense team. They also highlighted inconsistencies in his reports and the absence of any record of Clancy hearing voices urging her to kill herself.

Additional testimony from Tewksbury Hospital staff indicated Clancy remains in a state psychiatric facility, with occasional visits from family, but no evidence that she celebrates her children’s birthdays or otherwise commemorates them.

Potential outcomes

If convicted of murder, Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole. If the jury finds her not criminally responsible due to her mental condition, she would be committed to a state mental‑health facility.

Community resources

Organizers stress that the rally is not a protest but a show of compassion. They also provide resources for anyone experiencing emotional distress, including the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988) and online support at 988lifeline.org.
