Sikh truck driver stabbed 17 times at Sweetwater County rest stop, suspect arrested

Early Sunday morning, a Sikh truck driver identified only as Singh stopped at a rest area along I‑80 in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. While in the bathroom, he was ambushed from behind by a man later identified as 44‑year‑old Andrew Bzdak. According to the county sheriff’s office, Bzdak stabbed Singh 17 times, including multiple wounds to the neck and chest.

After the assault, Singh fled the bathroom and was captured on video lying on the parking lot floor. He called emergency services, reporting the stabbing. First responders found large amounts of blood inside the restroom, the lobby, and near a parked semi‑truck. Singh was airlifted to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, where he continues to recover.

Investigation and charges

Sweetwater County officials detained Bzdak after he fled the scene in his own truck. A family who heard Singh’s screams pursued Bzdak eastbound on I‑80 and alerted police. Bzdak is now charged with one count of attempting to commit first‑degree murder and is being held on a $1 million bond.

The suspect has a criminal history in California dating back to 2004, including convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, drunk driving and vandalism. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 24.

Potential bias motive

Local advocates and the North American Punjabi Trucking Association have expressed concern that the attack may be bias‑motivated, noting recent inflammatory social‑media posts by the Department of Homeland Security that targeted South Asian drivers. DHS later removed the post and called accusations of agency involvement “reckless and false.”

Jasjit Singh, director of legal services at the Jakara Movement, said there is no public determination yet that the assault was driven by Singh’s identity as a Punjabi Sikh. He warned that South Asian truck drivers may now fear similar attacks.

Community response

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D‑IL), an Indian‑American member of Congress, condemned the stabbing and called for accountability for any hate‑based violence. The incident has sparked broader discussion about safety and rhetoric affecting immigrant and South Asian truck drivers across the United States.
