Shreveport officials are voicing concern that the state legislature failed to fund critical lighting projects in residential neighborhoods and at a major intersection experiencing vehicle fatalities.
Local Impact
The city had requested money for multiple lighting projects, including the Allendale and MLK neighborhoods, and the Southern Loop interchange. However, lawmakers did not approve funding for these projects.
According to city lobbyist Chance McNeely, the state normally provides funds for lighting projects of this type, but not at the Southern Loop interchange. Council member Grayson Boucher noted that two nighttime vehicle fatalities occurred near the interchange due to poor visibility.
Police Chief Wayne Smith stated that crash data continues to be of grave concern, with Caddo Parish leading the state in vehicle fatalities and pedestrian fatalities. The city needs to secure approximately $500,000 to fund the Southern Loop project.
