During a recent appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan County Commissioner Nick Siddle provided a progress report on the Red Grade Road project, a key infrastructure effort that directly affects daily travel for residents and businesses in the county.
Project scope and partners
The county is collaborating with the Federal Highway Administration’s Central Federal Lands Highway Division and other federal land‑management agencies to improve approximately 2.5 miles of Red Grade Road. The partnership brings federal expertise and funding to a locally driven effort aimed at enhancing safety and durability on this important corridor.
Current work on the road
Commissioner Siddle described the work that is already underway. “If you take a little drive up Red Grade Road right now, you’ll see outstanding retaining walls being installed,” he said. The walls, built from large rocks, are designed to hold back the upper slopes that flank the roadway, reducing the risk of landslides and erosion.
According to the county engineer, the next phase will focus on the lower side of the road. “We plan to start putting a retaining wall on the lower side within the next couple of weeks,” Siddle explained. This sequential approach allows crews to address the most critical sections first while minimizing disruption to traffic.
Benefits for the community
Improved retaining walls and related upgrades are expected to extend the lifespan of Red Grade Road, lower maintenance costs, and provide a smoother, safer driving experience for families, commuters, and commercial vehicles alike. The project also supports local economic activity by ensuring reliable access for businesses that depend on the road for deliveries and customer traffic.
Looking ahead
Commissioner Siddle emphasized that the county remains committed to completing the project efficiently and transparently. He encouraged residents to stay informed through future Public Pulse updates and county communications. “We’ll keep the community posted on milestones and any upcoming construction impacts,” he said.
The Red Grade Road improvements illustrate Sheridan County’s ongoing investment in essential infrastructure, a priority that aligns with broader state and federal goals of maintaining safe, functional transportation networks for all citizens.
