Shein delays Hong Kong IPO launch to September, citing order‑taking slowdown

Shein, the China‑based fast‑fashion retailer known for its low‑priced apparel sold in roughly 160 countries, announced that its highly anticipated initial public offering in Hong Kong will not occur until September. The postponement follows a slight slowdown in the process of taking investor orders, according to a report by the South China Morning Post on Thursday.

Revised timeline and valuation expectations

The company had originally planned to complete the entire IPO process by the end of August, with book‑building slated to begin on August 24. After the brief delay, Shein now expects to start the book‑building phase later in the month and to move toward a September pricing.

Earlier Reuters coverage indicated that Shein was aiming for a valuation of about $25 billion, roughly a quarter of the near‑$100 billion figure that surfaced during a share sale four years ago. That estimate represents a reduction from the $30 billion to $40 billion range that market participants had been speculating about at the start of the month.

Investor structure and cornerstone commitments

Shein plans to bring multiple cornerstone investors into the offering, though most of the cornerstone positions are expected to be filled by existing shareholders. Investment banks involved in the transaction are also considering allocating their own funds to serve as cornerstone investors, according to the South China Morning Post report.

While the exact list of cornerstone participants has not been disclosed, the strategy of using existing shareholders and bank‑funded cornerstones is intended to provide stability to the offering and to signal confidence in the company’s growth prospects.

Background on Shein’s market presence

Founded in 2012, Shein has built a global presence by offering inexpensive clothing items—such as $5 dresses and $10 jeans—to consumers worldwide. Its rapid expansion and data‑driven supply chain have made it a prominent player in the online fashion space, attracting a young, price‑sensitive demographic.

The Hong Kong IPO represents Shein’s first major public‑market listing, and investors have been closely watching the valuation metrics, given the company’s swift rise and the broader market’s appetite for high‑growth technology‑enabled retailers.

Company response

Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters regarding the revised timeline.

Analysts note that the delay, while modest, underscores the importance of securing sufficient investor demand before finalizing pricing. The market will likely assess the final valuation once the book‑building process concludes and the company files its prospectus with Hong Kong regulators.
