Shawnee Mission School District Prepares for New Year

The Shawnee Mission School District is preparing for the 2026-2027 school year with a new cell phone policy and resources for families. The district, which serves students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in 34 elementary schools, five middle schools, five high schools, and several educational centers, has been consistently ranked among the finest school districts nationwide for its high student performance.

New Cell Phone Policy

The Board of Education approved Board Policy JCDC: Restrictions on Possession and Use of Personal Electronic Devices, which prohibits students from using or accessing personal electronic communication devices during the school day while on district-owned or operated property, except as expressly permitted by this policy or by law. The policy defines a personal electronic communication device as any wireless electronic communication device that provides for voice, text, or video communication between two or more parties, including mobile or cellular phones, tablets, computers, watches, wireless headphones or earbuds, text messaging devices, or personal digital assistants.

Student handbooks now reflect the language of this bell-to-bell personal electronic device policy, as approved by the Board. The district serves a diverse student population from 14 cities within northeast Johnson County, Kansas, which is 10 miles from downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
