Shawnee Breaks Ground on New 47,000‑Sq‑Ft Military Readiness Center

Shawnee leaders gathered on Monday to mark the groundbreaking of a new Oklahoma Military Department Readiness Center, a modern training and emergency‑management hub for the Oklahoma Army National Guard. The ceremony, held on the west side of the runway at Shawnee Regional Airport, highlighted the city’s partnership with state and military partners to bring a critical facility to the community.

Project details and timeline

The 47,000‑square‑foot building will house classrooms, offices, training areas, storage space and a multi‑purpose drill hall. Officials said the design incorporates energy‑efficient systems, solar panels and backup power capabilities to ensure reliable operation during emergencies. Construction is expected to be completed within 18 months, providing a state‑of‑the‑art venue for National Guard training and regional disaster response.

Local collaboration and economic impact

Mayor Jeff Miller praised the project as a long‑awaited investment, noting that the center has been “more than 15 years in the making.” He emphasized that the facility will create construction jobs in the short term and, once operational, will bring a steady presence of military personnel and support staff to Shawnee. The city expects ancillary benefits for local businesses, including increased demand for lodging, dining and retail services when National Guard units conduct drills or host regional events.

City Manager Lisa Hernandez added that the readiness center aligns with Shawnee’s broader economic development strategy, which seeks to attract mission‑critical infrastructure while preserving the city’s small‑town character. “This project not only strengthens our emergency‑management capabilities, it also signals to investors that Shawnee is a community that supports both national defense and sustainable growth,” she said.

Community and constitutional relevance

The readiness center underscores the importance of a well‑trained militia, a principle rooted in the Constitution’s provision for a citizen‑based defense force. By providing modern facilities for the National Guard, Shawnee is helping to ensure that the state’s militia can respond swiftly to natural disasters, civil emergencies and other threats, thereby protecting families and preserving the liberties of Oklahoma’s citizens.

Local veterans’ groups expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that a nearby, fully equipped training site will reduce travel time for service members and allow families to stay closer to home during drills. The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce also highlighted the center’s potential to attract future federal and state contracts related to emergency preparedness.

Next steps

Construction crews will begin site preparation this week, with the foundation poured in the coming months. City officials plan to hold a public open house once the building is topped out, giving residents an opportunity to see the finished interior and learn about the National Guard’s role in community safety.

The project is funded through a combination of state appropriations, federal military construction grants and local contributions. As the groundbreaking ceremony concluded, officials thanked the community for its ongoing support and encouraged residents to stay informed about construction milestones through the city’s website and social‑media channels.
