Route 66 Beach Festival Brings International Athletes to Arcadia Lake in Edmond

Edmond residents will enjoy a weekend of beach‑style fun this Saturday and Sunday at Arcadia Lake as the Route 66 Beach Festival kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. The event brings more than 200 international athletes to the city, including competitors from Peru and members of Team USA, to demonstrate beach sprint rowing – a sport set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

Olympic‑bound sport on display

Beach sprint rowing combines speed and skill on a short, straight course. Festival attendees will have a front‑row view of the athletes as they race, giving the community a preview of what to expect when the sport appears on the Olympic program in 2028. Organizers say the showcase is part of a broader effort to grow paddling and rowing across the nation.

Local leadership backs the event

Edmond Mayor Mark Nash praised the festival as a boost to the city’s recreational offerings. “When Mike came to our tourism director and me with this idea, I didn’t hesitate,” Nash said. “We have an opportunity to expand recreational sports, especially water sports; why would we not take advantage of it?”

Mike Knopp, founder of RIVERSPORT, announced a new national initiative called the “Open Water Collective.” The program aims to establish 28 new boathouses nationwide by 2028, honoring the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics and creating a lasting legacy for water‑sport enthusiasts.

Family‑friendly entertainment

Beyond the athletic competition, the festival offers live music, a variety of food trucks, beach games and the signature Oklahoma heat that makes outdoor gatherings memorable. Admission is free, though parking is $10 per car. Safety measures include a visible police presence, Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers, county sheriff resources, a mobile safety unit and security cameras throughout the venue.

Why the festival matters to Edmond

The Route 66 Beach Festival highlights Edmond’s commitment to providing wholesome, family‑oriented activities that celebrate both local culture and international sport. By hosting an Olympic‑preview event, the city positions itself as a hub for emerging athletic disciplines while offering residents a weekend of affordable, safe recreation.

Organizers encourage everyone in the community to attend, enjoy the beach atmosphere, and support the athletes who are helping to shape the future of Olympic competition.
