The Senate Leadership Fund, the fundraising arm of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, announced Monday that it and allied groups have secured $500 million for the 2026 midterm elections. A share of those resources is being directed to Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley, who is currently lagging behind Democrat Roy Cooper in campaign finances.
Financial picture in North Carolina
Federal Election Commission reports through the second quarter show Cooper has raised $34.9 million and holds $20.7 million cash on hand. Whatley has raised $11.2 million with $3.4 million cash on hand. The Leadership Fund’s contributions are not reflected in those totals, effectively narrowing the fiscal gap between the two candidates.
National advertising push
Ads funded by the Leadership Fund are already airing in states ranging from Alaska to Michigan, emphasizing Democrats’ perceived “soft on crime” stance, particularly in reference to the tragic killing of 22‑year‑old Logan Federico in Columbia, South Carolina. The campaign highlights the alleged criminal background of Alexander Dickey, accused of breaking into the home where Federico was staying and shooting her.
Alex Latchman, executive director of the fund, said the $500 million haul represents the largest Senate‑specific fundraising effort in history, underscoring the Trump administration’s commitment to securing a Republican majority in the chamber.
Broader electoral context
Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats and view the North Carolina race as pivotal for maintaining that edge. The state’s Senate contests have been a Republican stronghold since 2008, and the party aims to extend that streak in 2026. Across the nation, the campaign calendar includes early in‑person voting from Oct. 15‑31 and absentee‑ballot mailing beginning a week before the Friday deadline, with Election Day set for Nov. 3.
Voters in North Carolina will also decide on all 14 U.S. House seats, the entire General Assembly, and numerous local offices, including judges and district attorneys.
