Senate Bill Aims to Overhaul College Sports

A bill to regulate payments to college athletes, limit transfers, and restrict coaches from changing jobs during a season is set to be debated by the Senate Commerce Committee. The Protect College Sports Act, sponsored by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, has won backing from several athletic conferences, the NFL, and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee.

Key Provisions

The bill aims to stabilize college sports by introducing rules on player compensation, transfers, and coach hiring. It has the support of the Olympic committee, which expects the revised bill to add further protections for women’s and Olympic sports. However, the two most powerful conferences in college sports, the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten Conference, have not endorsed the bill.

Some Democrats on the Senate Commerce Committee are still undecided on the bill, with further changes possible. The bill’s fate remains uncertain, with lawmakers expected to consider amendments during the hearing.
