US Sen. James Lankford is pushing for the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, a bipartisan bill he has supported since 2019, to address the recurring issue of government shutdowns.
Preventing Shutdowns
The 2025 government shutdown was the longest in US history, and this year, the government is set to run out of money by the end of September. Lankford said, ‘Because both sides, when they’re in the minority, they consider this leverage over the president and over the majority side. But it’s not leverage. It’s actually cutting off pay to federal workers and their families. It shuts down federal services. It’s dumb every time.’
The Prevent Government Shutdowns Act proposes keeping Congress in Washington, D.C., until funding bills are completed. ‘We’re in continuous sessions, seven days a week. You can’t move to bills other than appropriations. We have to stay in place,’ Lankford said.
Iran War Costs
Lankford also spoke about the war in Iran, which has cost $37.5 billion so far, as the Pentagon requests additional funding. ‘The president has been very focused on this regime cannot have a nuclear weapon. They’ve got to end funding for their terrorist proxies, and they’ve got to reopen the Strait of Hormuz,’ Lankford said.
