Sen. Blumenthal celebrates bipartisan Russia sanctions bill as Trump prepares to sign

Connecticut’s senior senator, Richard Blumenthal, praised the swift approval of a new sanctions bill aimed at curbing Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. The legislation, crafted with the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, imposes steep tariffs—up to 100%—on the top five importers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India, and extends sanctions to Russia’s energy firms, financial institutions, officials, and its so‑called “shadow fleet” of tankers. It also adds Iran to the sanctions list.

Congressional vote and bipartisan support

After months of negotiation, the House approved the measure on a Wednesday night, with several dozen Democrats joining the majority of Republicans. All five of Connecticut’s Democratic representatives voted against it, citing worries that the bill gives President Trump broad discretion to impose tariffs.

Blumenthal, who helped shape the bill, described the outcome as “a big freaking deal,” noting the rarity of major legislation passing in today’s polarized climate. He recalled his many trips to Ukraine since the invasion began in 2022, emphasizing the urgency of strong economic pressure on Moscow.

Trump’s role and the administration’s stance

President Trump has publicly supported the bill and is expected to sign it into law. The administration argues that granting the president tariff authority will enable a rapid response to Russian aggression, aligning with the broader goal of protecting American consumers from the costs of a prolonged conflict.

In a joint statement, Connecticut’s congressional delegation—Reps. John Larson, Joe Courtney, Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes, and Jahana Hayes—affirmed their commitment to Ukraine while expressing reservations about the bill’s current form. They warned that the discretion left to the president could allow “reckless tariffs at the expense of the American consumer” without additional military aid.

Democratic concerns and future steps

The Connecticut Democrats highlighted the bill’s lack of direct military assistance and the potential for the president to misuse the new authority. They pointed to the president’s ongoing trade dispute with Canada, which has already driven up prices for U.S. shoppers.

Blumenthal responded that, while the bill is not perfect, it represents a necessary step forward. He pledged to monitor the president’s implementation closely and to criticize any misuse of authority, noting that courts have previously struck down overreach of existing powers.

Looking ahead, Blumenthal stressed that more aid for Ukraine is still needed. With the November 3 elections looming, Congress will not reconvene until after the midterms, leaving a narrow window in the lame‑duck session for further action.

Local impact and next actions

Connecticut’s delegation, including Sen. Chris Murphy, who also voted for the bill, plans to continue advocating for additional military and economic support for Ukraine. The bipartisan nature of the sanctions package demonstrates that, even amid partisan divides, lawmakers can unite on foreign‑policy challenges that threaten both national security and American values.

As the bill heads to the White House, the administration’s next move will be closely watched by both supporters who see it as a decisive blow against Russian aggression and critics who fear expanded tariff powers could harm American consumers.
