SEC vows to contest court order that could let former NFL players suit up for LSU

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) said Thursday it will challenge a Louisiana judge’s temporary restraining order that could allow former professional football players to re‑enter college competition for Louisiana State University. The order, issued against the SEC and Commissioner Greg Sankey, is not a final ruling on the merits, the conference noted in a statement.

SEC’s stance and pending hearing

SEC officials said they will appear in a Louisiana courtroom Thursday morning to contest the plaintiffs’ petition and defend the conference’s right as a voluntary association to set eligibility standards for its member institutions. While the order is in effect, the league will comply but will “carefully review the Court’s decision and determine the appropriate next steps” after the hearing.

Potential impact on LSU

If the order stands, LSU could sign as many as three former NFL players for the upcoming season. The SEC’s own policy, approved unanimously by its presidents and chancellors last week, bans former professional athletes from returning to college play. LSU abstained from that vote.

Violations of the policy would trigger severe penalties: coaches could face a half‑season suspension, schools could be fined up to 50% of the sport’s annual operating budget, and voting privileges on league business could be revoked.

Legal arguments

Attorney Tony Clayton, representing the athletes seeking eligibility, told ESPN, “If Sankey shows up, I’d like to hear his argument. What gives him the right to anoint himself God and take these constitutional rights from these kids?” The case raises questions about the balance between conference authority and individual athletes’ rights.

Timing and next steps

LSU must finalize its roster for its season‑opening game against Clemson on Friday, adding urgency to the legal battle. The SEC said it will continue to monitor the situation and act in accordance with its mission to protect member institutions.

Dozens of athletes are involved in similar lawsuits across the country, challenging eligibility rules that bar former professionals from returning to collegiate competition.
