Seattle Prosecutors Address Crime Surge on Aurora Avenue

Residents along Seattle’s Aurora Avenue have voiced growing concerns over crime in their neighborhood, prompting a response from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Since 2024, more than 400 felony cases have been filed related to criminal activities in the area, including illegal sex work.

Community Concerns and Prosecutors’ Response

Spokesperson Casey McNerthney acknowledged the community’s frustrations, stating, “Neighbors are right, something has to be done. We feel for them.” The office released data showing 427 felony cases, which include 99 assaults, 44 burglaries, 67 organized retail theft cases, and 30 counts of unlawful gun possession. Many of these cases are linked to longstanding prostitution activity.

In a particularly troubling case, a Bellevue man was charged with trafficking a 14-year-old girl along Aurora Avenue, highlighting the dangers associated with the area. McNerthney emphasized the severity of the issue, noting, “The demand for buying children for sex is really driving this problem.” The suspect is scheduled for arraignment on June 4.

Community Actions and City Measures

Residents have taken matters into their own hands by installing homemade barriers on side streets following a series of drive-by shootings. The city responded by removing these blockades on May 29 and replacing them with concrete barriers as a “traffic calming” measure. Local resident Daniel Matedne expressed approval, saying, “Having [them] is going to stop people from turning the corner and flying up the street.”

Mayor Katie Wilson’s office has indicated that city agencies are considering more permanent solutions to address the ongoing issues along Aurora Avenue.
