A major search-and-rescue operation is underway along St. Pete Beach after a swimmer vanished in the Gulf on Friday evening, according to authorities.
Search Efforts
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to a call for assistance at approximately 9:15 p.m. on July 3, 2026, in the vicinity of 3850 Gulf Boulevard. Witnesses reported that a man entered the water to swim at around 7:00 p.m. but did not return and could not be found.
In the immediate hours following the report, deputies combed local businesses while the agency’s Marine Unit and Dive Team deployed to search the water. However, deteriorating weather conditions forced officials to temporarily suspend primary rescue operations overnight.
Search teams returned to the area on the morning of July 4, 2026, to resume the operation. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Dive Team, and Flight Unit are currently conducting active searches on the water and from the air, with additional on-scene assistance from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
