Sea Turtle Season is strong so far for leatherbacks and loggerheads. Loggerhead Marinelife Center has already recorded a total of over 300 leatherback nests on their 7.5 mile stretch of beach, which is their number two highest year so far.
Record-Breaking Season
As for loggerhead sea turtle nests, they believe this might be their top season to date with a total of over 12,000 nests and counting. This season has been noticeably slower for the green sea turtles. Dr. Katie Fowler, a research scientist at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, said, “This year has been really hot and dry and that impacts the sea turtles in different ways.”
Experts at Loggerhead Marinelife Center recommend never touching hatchlings if you see them making their way to the water and if you find any injured or lost ones, there is a drop box at the center or you can contact FWC. Nesting season runs through the end of October.
