Saturday Morning at Crisan Means the Good Croissants Are Gone by Nine

By ten-thirty on a rainy Saturday, the kind where the gutters on Central Avenue run fast and nobody’s in a hurry to go anywhere useful, the counter at Nosh at the Spectrum is doing exactly what a good Jewish-style deli counter should do: controlled chaos. Someone’s debating whether to get the pastrami or the brisket. Someone else is definitely getting both, and they’re not apologizing for it.

Nosh opened inside the Spectrum 8 building on Delaware Avenue — yes, the art-house movie theater — which makes it one of Albany’s stranger pairings on paper and one of its better ones in practice. You can catch a 2 p.m. foreign film and eat a legitimately good Reuben beforehand. That is, objectively, a fine afternoon.

The menu doesn’t pretend to be a New York City deli. It knows where it is, and it doesn’t oversell itself. What it does well: house-cured meats, solid latkes, a matzo ball soup that takes its job seriously, and a rotating list of specials that reflect whatever the kitchen feels like doing that week. The corned beef hash at brunch is worth the trip on its own — crispy on the outside, not dried out, served with eggs that actually arrive the way you asked.

Prices land somewhere in the fifteen-to-twenty-two dollar range for most entrees, which feels fair when the pastrami is sliced thick enough to matter. The portions are generous without being performative about it. You’ll finish your plate. You won’t feel like you need to lie down afterward. This is the ideal outcome.

The space itself is comfortable in the way that good neighborhood spots tend to be: not trying too hard with the decor, tables close enough together that you’ll overhear the couple next to you arguing gently about whether the movie they just saw was good or just long. The lighting is real lighting. You can read the menu without your phone flashlight.

Saturday mornings get busy, particularly around eleven when the brunch window opens properly, so if you’re bringing more than three people and you have somewhere to be after, maybe have a loose plan. The staff moves efficiently but this isn’t a churn-and-burn operation — they’re not rushing you out. That’s a feature, not a complaint.

Delaware Avenue is an underrated stretch for this kind of find. You’ve got the Spectrum theater anchoring the block, a couple of solid coffee spots within walking distance, and enough of a neighborhood feel that you’re not driving into a strip mall situation. Park on a side street and walk. It’s usually fine.

Nosh doesn’t have the name recognition of some Albany institutions, but it fills a real gap — namely, that Albany has not historically been flush with places where you can get a proper bowl of matzo ball soup without driving to a different zip code. It’s become a reliable fixture for the Delaware Avenue regulars, the theater crowd, and the people who just want a good lunch and don’t want to make a production out of finding one.

Go on a rainy Saturday. Order the Reuben. Watch it rain through the window. This is what lunch is supposed to feel like.
