Nexus Brewery opened in 2012 with a sci-fi theme and a ten-barrel system — not because the owners were trying to be quirky, but because founder Ken Carson genuinely loved both craft beer and science fiction, and saw no reason to separate them. More than a decade later, the place on Wyoming Boulevard NE, just south of Menaul, has outlasted plenty of trendier spots and built a steady following that shows up for the beer first and the food second, which is the right order of priorities.
The taproom is bigger than it looks from the parking lot. There’s an enclosed patio out back that works well most of the year, and the main room has the comfortable, slightly worn-in feel of a place that’s been used regularly without being renovated into blandness. Sci-fi posters and artwork line the walls — not in a forced, theme-park way, but more like whoever decorated it actually owns these things. It reads as personal rather than designed.
The beer list runs around 20 taps on a typical visit. Nexus brews its own and rotates seasonally, so what’s on changes, but the gold medal-winning Hefeweizen is almost always pouring and worth ordering if you’re unsure where to start. It’s a clean, traditional German-style wheat beer — banana and clove, good carbonation, nothing overdone. The Caldera IPA is a reasonable West Coast-style option if you want something with more bite. Pints run $6–$8, and flights are available if you want to work through several before committing.
The kitchen does better than most brewery kitchens in Albuquerque. The green chile cheeseburger is the obvious order and holds up well: half-pound patty, Hatch green, decent bun, fries that come out hot. The pizza is respectable — thin crust, nothing fancy — and the fish and chips have their advocates. Expect to spend $14–$18 on an entree. It’s not a destination for the food alone, but nothing’s going to disappoint you either.
Service is casual and efficient. This is not the kind of place where you wait twenty minutes for someone to take your drink order. The staff knows the beer list and can point you somewhere if you describe what you like.
Go on a weekday evening if you want it quiet. Weekends, especially Saturday afternoons, get busy — it’s a family-friendly space and there are usually kids around, which is worth knowing if that affects your preference. Happy hour runs weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. with $1 off pints.
Nexus doesn’t get as much press as some of Albuquerque’s downtown breweries, partly because it’s not in a neighborhood that generates a lot of foot traffic. You drive there on purpose. But the beer is consistently well-made, the space is comfortable, and after twelve years the place has clearly figured out what it is. That kind of steadiness is rarer than it should be.
Nexus Brewery is at 4730 Wyoming Blvd NE, open daily from 11 a.m.
