Louisville will welcome a new international market this Thursday as Saraga International Grocery opens its first Kentucky location on Hurstbourne Parkway in Lyndon. The 34,000‑square‑foot store occupies the former Lucky’s Market space and is the latest addition to the family‑owned chain that began in Indiana in the 1990s.
Local roots and global flavors
Manager Jun Sung, whose father and uncle founded the business, said the store reflects both the family’s long‑standing ties to Louisville and the city’s multicultural character. “We knew beforehand that Louisville was a very diverse city,” Sung explained. “I feel like we’re just further contributing to that by coming here.”
Sung’s father previously bought and sold wholesale goods on Seventh Street, establishing a foothold in the area before the grocery venture began. “Even before the grocery, he’s had roots in Louisville and always wanted to come back and do business here,” Sung added.
A marketplace for home‑grown and world cuisines
The new Saraga location will stock a broad range of products from Japan, Korea, Africa, Central America and Latin America, alongside locally sourced foods. The goal, according to Sung, is to give newcomers a taste of home while inviting longtime residents to explore unfamiliar cuisines.
“We’d like to carry everything that reminds people of home if they’re from out of the country,” he said. “We just really want people to be able to explore and come here and find stuff they haven’t tried before.”
Customers can also rediscover foods they may have tried elsewhere but could not identify or locate again. “I just feel like it’s a good opportunity for the community to come out,” Sung noted.
Grand opening details
Saraga International Grocery will hold a ribbon‑cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. on Thursday, followed by regular store hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The opening adds to Louisville’s growing retail landscape and offers residents another venue to celebrate the city’s cultural diversity through food.
With several locations already operating in Indiana and Ohio, the Louisville store marks the chain’s first expansion into Kentucky, signaling confidence in the region’s market potential and its vibrant, multicultural population.
