The CHP awarded grants to 160 law enforcement agencies across the state, including several in the Central Coast area. The funding comes from Proposition 64, which directs the department to administer grants for impaired driving education, prevention, and enforcement programs.
According to Traffic Supervisor Sgt. Shane Armstrong, the grant will help the Santa Maria Police Department to conduct extra patrols without additional funding from the city or taxpayers. The department was the only one in Santa Barbara County to receive the grant, while several agencies in San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties also received funding.
