Santa Fe community rallies to save dog Kimbo from euthanasia

Santa Fe residents gathered this week to protest the planned euthanasia of Kimbo, a three‑year‑old Pyrenees who was slated for removal after a minor incident in his kennel. The animal shelter announced that Kimbo had nipped the hand of a volunteer who reached inside his enclosure, prompting officials to consider ending his life.

Community response

Hundreds of supporters assembled outside the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, holding signs and urging officials to find an alternative solution. “Every animal deserves a second chance,” one protester said, reflecting the sentiment that drove the crowd.

In response to the outcry, shelter officials posted an update on Facebook, stating that a placement had been secured for Kimbo. The shelter thanked community members for their ideas and promised to confirm the details of the arrangement by Friday.

New plan for Kimbo

Kimbo is now expected to travel to Longmont, Colorado, where he will spend 21 days at a specialized dog‑training facility. The program aims to address any behavioral concerns and prepare him for a permanent home. After completing the training, Kimbo is slated to join the Mountain Mama Pyrs and Pups rescue organization in Utah, which focuses on rehoming rescued dogs.

The shelter’s announcement highlighted the collaborative effort between local volunteers, regional rescue groups, and the training center. “We are grateful for the community’s dedication to animal welfare,” the shelter wrote. “This outcome shows what can happen when neighbors come together for a common cause.”

What this means for local animal welfare

The Kimbo case underscores the importance of community involvement in shelter decisions. While shelters must balance limited resources with public safety, the incident demonstrates that public advocacy can lead to alternative solutions that benefit both animals and the community.

Local animal‑rights groups have called for increased funding and staffing for the shelter to reduce the likelihood of future euthanasia decisions. They argue that more robust behavioral assessment programs and volunteer training could help prevent similar situations.

Looking ahead

Kimbo’s journey from Santa Fe to Colorado and eventually Utah will be monitored by supporters who have pledged to follow his progress online. The shelter plans to share updates on his training milestones and eventual adoption.

For now, the community’s successful effort provides a hopeful example of how local action can protect vulnerable animals and promote compassionate alternatives to euthanasia.
