Sanford city commissioners on Monday discussed potential cuts to parks and recreation services as a proposed property tax amendment could lead to an 18% reduction in the city’s general fund over two years.
Local Impact
Stay-at-home mom Lauren Eynouf, who frequently visits Fort Mellon Park with her toddler, shared her thoughts on the importance of local parks. “We actually go to the parks every single day for the most part,” she said. “I think having more options in parks and free things for moms and kids or any family to go to would be a huge benefit.”
Sanford Mayor Art Woodruff said it is too early to make definitive decisions but acknowledged the financial challenges the city could face. “We are looking at all opportunities. Are there places we can cut? There are some. There is not 18% of our budget that we can cut,” Woodruff said.
State Perspective
Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, who supports the proposal to increase the homestead property tax exemption, argued that local government budgets need to prioritize essential services. “We should focus on education, roads, law enforcement, and fire first, and then you can talk about discretionary spending from there,” Collins said.
