In a candid interview on the “SmartLess” podcast, actress Sandra Bullock opened up about the loss of her partner Bryan Randall and his private battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Bullock explained that Randall asked her not to discuss his diagnosis publicly, a request she respected out of love and concern for their family’s well‑being.
Respecting Privacy During a Difficult Time
Randall, a model‑turned‑photographer, passed away in 2023 at the age of 57 after living with ALS for several years. Bullock said the disease, which attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually stripped him of the ability to move, speak, eat and breathe. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it,” she told hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, “that was the request and I tried — I honored it.”
She added that the pandemic amplified the isolation felt by families dealing with serious illness, making it even harder to share the burden. Bullock’s sister, Gesine Bullock‑Prado, was the only family member aware of the diagnosis for a time, and the actress later confided in close friends Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka.
Grieving Years Before the End
Bullock revealed that she began grieving Randall four years before his death, noting that he was ill for roughly half of their relationship. The couple, who made their partnership public in 2015, co‑parented Bullock’s son Louis and daughter Laila, as well as Randall’s daughter Skylar Staten Randall from a previous relationship.
“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” Bullock said, describing the emotional toll of watching a loved one decline while trying to maintain normalcy for their children.
Family Resilience and Faith
Throughout the ordeal, Bullock emphasized the importance of planning and faith. She described herself as a “very good planner with illness,” drawing on past family experiences with serious health challenges, including her father’s accidents and her mother’s battle with cancer.
She praised the dedication of four nurses who cared for Randall and expressed gratitude for her children’s strength, especially her younger daughter, who saw Randall as a father figure.
Moving Forward
After Randall’s passing, Bullock focused on healing, supporting her children, and ensuring her family was in a stable place before returning to work. Earlier this year she told People magazine that she prioritized her family’s emotional health before resuming her acting career.
She is currently promoting the upcoming sequel “Practical Magic 2,” slated for release next month, where she reprises her role as Sally Owens in a story about a multigenerational family of witches.
The full “SmartLess” interview will be available on all podcast platforms on August 24.
