Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., recently endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. El-Sayed, a progressive candidate, will face Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., in the August 4 primary.
Michigan Senate Primary Heats Up
Sanders delivered his remarks at a Detroit campaign rally, stating that the election is not between El-Sayed and Stevens, but between El-Sayed and the ‘billionaire class.’ Sanders claimed that wealthy donors and outside groups have poured unprecedented sums into the race to defeat El-Sayed, with $50 million spent against him so far.
According to AdImpact, super PACs backing Stevens are spending about $26.9 million on television ads during the final five weeks of the primary, compared with roughly $2.1 million backing El-Sayed. The Michigan Senate primary has emerged as one of the most closely watched Democratic contests of the 2026 cycle, highlighting the growing divide between the party’s progressive and establishment wings.
