Deep in southern Iowa, the town of Moravia, with a population of 700, has waited almost four decades for a state baseball berth. The Moravia Mohawks, led by legendary coach Bill Huisman, have ended this 38-year drought by earning their first state tournament berth since 1988.
Coach Huisman’s Milestone
Coach Huisman, in his 46th year as a coach, achieved his 1,000th career win earlier this season. He shares the head coaching role with Phil Helmick, who is in his sixth season with the Mohawks. Huisman’s experience and guidance have been instrumental in the team’s success.
The team’s success has generated immense excitement and support throughout the town. Junior infielder Blak Ewing expressed the team’s enthusiasm, saying, “It’s been a huge thing throughout the town. We’ve had so much support, and everyone has been ecstatic – team included. Can’t wait to get there and upset the one-seed.”
State Tournament
The Moravia Mohawks will face the Rapids-Bayard team on Monday night in the state tournament. With Coach Huisman’s nearly 1,000 wins and Rapids coach John Waddle’s experience, the combined career wins in the dugouts will be nearly 2000.
