Colorado Springs – A week after a football game between Sand Creek High School and Lutheran High School sparked allegations of racist taunts, Sarita Lewis, mother of a Sand Creek cheerleader, is demanding accountability from the schools involved.
Mother speaks out
Lewis said she was not present at the away game, but learned of the incident afterward. “As a parent, you can’t be there to protect your children,” she told KRDO13. “It’s an away game, I wasn’t there.”
She explained that her family is “interracial, multicultural,” and that the alleged behavior has caused emotional trauma for her daughter. “Action needs to be taken,” Lewis said. “The fact that we have our school, the school after us and now another school that’s wanting to forfeit because they don’t want their students impacted—that speaks for itself.”
Other schools respond
Following the incident, Air Academy High School decided to forfeit its upcoming homecoming game against Lutheran High School. Lewis praised the decision, noting that “at this age, they’re going through enough pressure. This is the last thing that they need. So I think that it was a very smart safeguard that these coaches did to protect their students.”
Air Academy’s administration, District 20 and the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) have released statements confirming the forfeiture, citing concerns for student safety and well‑being.
Calls for accountability
Lewis is urging both Sand Creek and Lutheran school districts to investigate the alleged taunts and to implement measures that prevent similar incidents. She emphasized the importance of a safe environment for all students, regardless of background.
“We come from an interracial, multicultural family,” Lewis reiterated. “Action needs to be taken.”
Community reaction
Local residents and parents have expressed a range of reactions, with many supporting Lewis’s call for transparency and accountability. Some community members have reached out to school officials requesting updates on any investigations.
Full statements from Air Academy High School, District 20 and the CHSAA are available on the KRDO website.
Next steps
Sand Creek High School has not yet issued a public response. The school district is expected to review the allegations and determine appropriate actions. Parents and students are encouraged to stay informed through school communications and local news outlets.
