San Marcos High School seeks new boys basketball coach after Jordan resigns

San Marcos High School announced that longtime head coach Matt Jordan has resigned from his position leading the boys basketball program. Jordan, who guided the Royals to a combined 43-15 record over the past two seasons, issued a brief statement thanking the players, families, and the broader San Marcos community for their support.

Jordan’s tenure and achievements

During his two‑year stint, Jordan built a competitive foundation for the program. In the 2024‑25 season the Royals posted a 21‑8 overall record and went 11‑3 in Channel League play, finishing second in the conference. The following year the team improved to 22‑7 overall and 12‑2 in league play, again securing a second‑place finish. The 2026 CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs saw San Marcos win its opening round 69‑51 over Calabasas before falling in the second round to Rancho Verde.

Community response

San Marcos High School Principal Dare Holdren expressed gratitude for Jordan’s contributions, noting that the coach’s “good work” helped elevate the basketball program and strengthen relationships among students, families, and staff. Holdren added that the school wishes Jordan success in his future endeavors.

Next steps for the program

With the head‑coach position now open, the existing coaching staff will continue to oversee daily practices and game preparation. The administration indicated that a formal search for a new head coach will be announced in the near future, though no timeline was provided.

What this means for local families

For the many parents and students who follow high‑school athletics closely, the coaching change is a notable development. San Marcos High School’s basketball program has become a source of pride for the community, and continued stability will be important as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed through school communications and local sports coverage.

Looking ahead

The search for a new head coach presents an opportunity for fresh leadership to build on the solid foundation Jordan established. As the school moves forward, the focus will remain on fostering teamwork, academic achievement, and community involvement—values that resonate with families throughout San Marcos.
