San Francisco celebrates lowriding heritage with King of the Streets parade

San Francisco’s Mission Street came alive Saturday as dozens of lowrider vehicles rolled through the city for the annual King of the Streets celebration, a centerpiece of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The event, organized by the San Francisco Lowrider Council, drew participants and spectators of all ages who gathered to honor a cultural tradition that has long been a source of pride for Mexican‑American and Chicano families.

Celebrating a newly recognized art form

“We finally got our stamp of approval,” said Roberto Hernandez, founder of the council, referring to the United States Postal Service’s recent issuance of stamps featuring five classic lowriders. Hernandez also noted that Governor Gavin Newsom announced a special state‑issued lowrider license plate, further cementing the community’s growing visibility.

Lowriding, which traces its roots to Mexican‑American neighborhoods in the Southwest, is described by participants as an art form. Vehicles are lowered with custom suspensions, painted with elaborate designs, fitted with chrome accents, and equipped with hydraulics that allow them to bounce and hop. For many, the cars represent both craftsmanship and a visual expression of identity.

Family, faith, and community

“It’s about driving low, being seen and going slow,” explained Johnny Castro, a longtime lowrider who attended the parade with his wife and children. “We go slow so people can see us, see our art that we put together here, because it does take time and money to put these cars together.” The event highlighted how lowriding serves as a family affair, with multiple generations sharing the hobby and passing down skills.

The road to acceptance has not always been smooth. Hernandez recalled a period when police issued citations, made arrests, and shut down cruising on Mission Street. He eventually sued the city and police department, arguing for the right to cruise. Similar anti‑cruising ordinances appeared in other California cities during the 1980s, and critics argued those rules disproportionately affected Latino communities.

State‑level support

In 2023, Governor Newsom signed legislation that removed California’s restrictions on cruising and stripped local governments of the ability to enact bans based solely on repeated driving through an area. The law was intended to protect cultural traditions like lowriding while still allowing municipalities to address legitimate safety concerns.

The celebration on Mission Street featured live music, food vendors, and a vibrant display of custom cars that bounced in time with the beats. Spectators cheered as each vehicle performed its signature hop, showcasing the skill of the drivers and the creativity of the builders.

Looking ahead

Organizers hope the event will continue to grow, drawing more families and visitors to experience the unique blend of art, heritage, and community that lowriding represents. With state recognition, a dedicated license plate, and the backing of local advocates, the culture is poised to enjoy broader acceptance while preserving its roots in Mexican‑American identity and craftsmanship.
