San Antonio families can now boost their learning opportunities without spending a dime, thanks to an expanded suite of services from the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL). The library’s latest back‑to‑school initiative gives cardholders access to free Wi‑Fi hotspots, 24/7 online tutoring and a wide range of exam‑preparation tools.
Free Wi‑Fi hotspots at ten branches
Library patrons with a valid SAPL card can check out a portable Wi‑Fi hotspot from any of ten branches: Bazan, Collins Garden, Cortez, Forest Hills, Las Palmas, Memorial, Mission, Pan American, Schaefer and Westfall. The devices operate like books: a family checks one out, uses it at home for up to three weeks, returns it to the same branch, and can immediately re‑check it out for another three‑week period if no one is waiting.
Scott Williams, marketing manager for SAPL, said the pilot program targets neighborhoods identified through equity and broadband‑need analyses. “More than 60 % of the available hotspots have already been checked out, and demand continues to grow,” he noted.
Round‑the‑clock homework help
Through a partnership with Brain Fuse, the library now offers free, professional tutoring any time of day or night. The service is open to students from kindergarten through graduate school and is available in both English and Spanish, ensuring broader accessibility for the city’s diverse population.
“You can access it from anywhere that you have an internet connection,” Williams explained, emphasizing the flexibility that online tutoring provides for busy families.
Online exam‑preparation resources
For those preparing for career or college entrance exams, SAPL provides free entry to LearningExpressHub.com. The platform includes study materials for nursing and health‑care certifications, firefighter and law‑enforcement exams, as well as the ACT and SAT.
Williams highlighted the time pressures many residents face: “Time is such a constraint for people, especially if you’re looking for a new career. You’re probably already working a job, maybe two jobs. You don’t have a lot of time. So in those precious moments that you have, the library is there in person and online 24/7 to help you make the next move in your life.”
How to get started
Residents can apply for a library card at any SAPL branch or online through the library’s website. Once issued, the card unlocks the hotspot checkout system, the Brain Fuse tutoring portal and the LearningExpressHub resources. No additional fees are required.
The expanded services reflect SAPL’s commitment to supporting education, workforce development and digital equity across San Antonio, especially in areas where broadband access remains limited.
