Covid cases rise in summer as traditional flu season remains low

Health officials are warning that Covid-19 is beginning a summer surge even as the traditional flu and RSV season has not yet started. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the test positivity rate for the week ending August 8 rose above 3%, the highest level since March, and numbers are climbing in every state.

Regional trends and expert insight

Dr. Caitlin Rivers, an outbreak science expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health and Security, noted that the South and the West are leading the current Covid wave, echoing past patterns that often begin in Florida, Texas and Georgia. “August is solidly Covid season,” she said.

Unlike flu and RSV, which typically peak once a year between December and February, Covid-19 shows both winter and summer activity. This shift means that many Americans are now facing a “coughing and sneezing” season earlier than usual.

How the data is being tracked

Tracking Covid spread has become more challenging since the federal government reduced reporting requirements. Labs no longer must submit negative test results, and hospitals are not required to report detailed bed capacity. As a result, the CDC now relies on a mix of indicators, including wastewater surveillance, emergency‑room visits and limited lab data.

Dr. Scott Harris, state health officer for the Alabama Department of Public Health, explained that without comprehensive hospitalization or mortality data, officials are left with only positive test counts, making it harder to gauge the true scale of the outbreak.

Tools for individuals

Experts suggest that residents use online platforms such as PopHIVE, a free tool that aggregates near‑real‑time health data, to monitor local Covid trends before traveling or attending events. Dr. Amanda Zink, an emergency‑room physician and Yale fellow, recommends checking these resources and taking personal precautions based on the information available.

In the Bay Area, wastewater monitoring by Stanford’s WastewaterSCAN program flagged a rise in Covid activity, prompting some residents to wear masks at concerts and on flights. Wastewater data can reveal viral presence days before people feel ill, offering an early warning system for communities.

Precautions and treatment options

The CDC continues to advise basic preventive measures: regular hand washing for at least 20 seconds, wearing a well‑fitting N95 mask in crowded indoor settings, and staying home when symptomatic. For those at higher risk, a discussion with a healthcare provider about a Covid booster—potentially the updated formulation expected in late September—is recommended.

New oral antiviral Xocova is now available for people 12 and older who have been exposed to the virus, while Paxlovid remains an option for treating confirmed infections, though it is no longer provided free of charge.

Looking ahead

With summer travel, the start of the school year and waning immunity from prior vaccination or infection, officials expect Covid cases to continue rising through the fall. Monitoring regional trends and taking personal protective steps can help families stay healthy during this atypical respiratory‑virus season.
