Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) responded Monday to a bear encounter at an apartment complex in Eagle‑Vail, about 100 miles west of Denver. While leaving the building’s laundry room, a man came face‑to‑face with a female black bear. The animal scratched his arm, and the man tripped, hurting his foot as he tried to escape.
The victim was taken to a medical facility by a family member, where he received treatment for his arm and foot injuries. He was later released and is recovering at home.
Why bears are venturing into neighborhoods
CPW officials said severe drought conditions have limited natural food sources, forcing bears to travel farther in search of sustenance. “The incident serves as a reminder that bears are active, and severe drought conditions have driven increased wildlife activity in populated areas,” the agency noted.
In addition, late summer marks the start of hyperphagia, a period when bears consume up to 20,000 calories a day to build fat reserves for winter hibernation. This heightened feeding drive makes bears more mobile and more likely to explore human‑occupied spaces.
CPW response and safety recommendations
After the attack, CPW officers remained on site overnight to capture the sow and her cubs. They placed a bear trap in the neighborhood but believe a larger male bear in the area may be keeping the sow and her offspring away.
Officials emphasized that residents should never feed or approach bears. Properly securing trash, animal feed, pet food, and outdoor grills can reduce attractants. Keeping windows and doors locked, and storing food indoors, are also recommended steps to prevent future conflicts.
Record number of bear reports
Colorado has recorded a high number of bear sightings and reports this year, according to CPW. The agency attributes the increase to drought‑driven food scarcity and the natural hyperphagic phase of the bears.
Residents are encouraged to report bear activity promptly so wildlife officials can respond safely and protect both people and animals.
