San Antonio Food Bank Encourages Families to Volunteer This Summer

As summer break begins, the San Antonio Food Bank is calling on families to dedicate some of their free time to community service. The food bank, a vital resource for many in the area, welcomes volunteers of all ages to help meet the ongoing needs of the community.

Liz Johanek, director of volunteer services at the San Antonio Food Bank, highlighted a seasonal decline in volunteer numbers, noting that the organization requires assistance seven days a week. ‘Shifts vary based on what you’re doing. The one that is most family-friendly is two and a half hours, and we have it twice a day. So in the morning and in the afternoon,’ Johanek explained.

Opportunities for Families

The food bank offers various tasks suitable for families, ensuring that everyone can contribute regardless of age. However, for specific events like the upcoming mobile food distribution at the Boeing Center at Tech Port on June 6, volunteers must be over 14 years old, capable of lifting up to 25 pounds, and wear closed-toe shoes.

Johanek emphasized that volunteering is as crucial as donating money or food, as it helps maintain the food bank’s operations and supports the community directly. Families interested in volunteering can find more information on the food bank’s website.
