San Antonio Councilman Ric Galvan is calling for a temporary moratorium on the development of data centers in the city. Galvan, along with Councilwomen Teri Castillo and Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, signed a memo requesting a vote on the moratorium by August 31.
Concerns Over Data Centers
The council members are concerned about the potential environmental impact of data centers, as well as their effect on the local community. Galvan’s district has the highest concentration of data centers in San Antonio and Bexar County.
Galvan wants to ensure that data centers do not harm the environment, create local benefits for the community, are built by union labor, and do not raise residents’ bills. He is also calling on Texas Governor Greg Abbott to convene a special session on data centers.
The city-owned utilities, CPS Energy and San Antonio Water System, are being asked to develop plans to require new data centers to use clean energy and recycled water.
