About 50 artists and community members gathered at Blue Star Contemporary to discuss how Project Marvel should reflect San Antonio’s arts and cultural identity.
Project Marvel Overview
Project Marvel is a $4 billion redevelopment plan centered on a proposed $1.3 billion Spurs arena, including an expanded Henry B. González Convention Center and improvements to the Alamodome.
District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo hosted the discussion, focusing on how local artists could help shape the redevelopment and how the Spurs’ proposed $75 million community benefits package could support artists and cultural organizations.
Artist Input and Community Benefits
Author Mitzi Moore emphasized the importance of building on the city’s growing momentum for the arts, while sculptor Bill FitzGibbons proposed creating an advisory committee to work with architects and designers throughout the project.
Artistic director and dancer Catherine Cisneros stressed that local artists should have a central role in the project, as they are the ones who make the city beautiful and attract visitors.
