The Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) has approved plans for two new rooftop dining options in San Antonio’s downtown area. The first, Maverick Plaza Mexican Restaurant, will be led by Chef Johnny Hernandez and feature a 28-foot stair tower to the rooftop dining area. The second, The Night Heron, will be an addition to the existing Casa Rio restaurant and feature a street-level space and a rooftop level with a small-bites menu.
Maverick Plaza Mexican Restaurant
Maverick Plaza Mexican Restaurant will be located at the corner of East Nueva and South Alamo streets in the La Villita historic district. The restaurant will feature a two-story building with precast stone, brick, and stucco, and a stairwell leading to a rooftop dining area. Chef Johnny Hernandez stated that he wants to create a beautiful rooftop dining experience for his guests.
The Night Heron
The Night Heron will be an addition to the existing Casa Rio restaurant, located at 430 E. Commerce St. on the San Antonio River Walk. The new structure will feature a street-level space and a rooftop level with a small-bites menu inspired by restaurants in Mexico City and a fusion of the flavors at Casa Rio and Schilo’s. Co-owner Elizabeth Lyons Houston said that the restaurant will be nature-forward and feature a name that derives from a childhood memory of finding an orphaned heron on a restaurant balcony.
