Salem Weekend Highlights: Free Art Walk, State Fair Fun, and Punk Rock Festival

Salem residents have a packed lineup of free and low‑cost events this week, from cultural arts to classic fair attractions. Below is a quick guide to help families and friends plan their outings.

State Fair Extends Through Labor Day

The Oregon State Fair remains open through Monday, Sept. 7, giving everyone a chance to enjoy carnival rides, games, animal exhibits, fair food, and live concerts. Highlights include country singer Jo Dee Messina on Sept. 4, heavy‑metal legends Twisted Sister on Sept. 6, and a surprise set by Weird Al Yankovic on Sept. 7. Gates open at 10 a.m. daily, with rides starting at 11 a.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for children ages 6‑12, $3 for seniors 65+, and free for children under six. The fairgrounds are located at 2330 17th St. N.E.

Free Punk Rock Festival and Resource Fair – Saturday, Sept. 5

Riverfront Park and Amphitheater will host an all‑ages resource fair and punk rock festival beginning at 11 a.m. The event features local bands, free food trucks for youth ages 11‑18, a clothing closet, and more than 50 community resource booths. It’s a great opportunity for families to connect with local services while enjoying high‑energy music.

Live Radio Broadcast – Downtown Salem, Saturday, Sept. 5

Salem’s indie station 105.5 The Moon invites listeners to join a city‑wide drive‑around at 7 p.m. Participants are asked to roll down their windows and tune in for an hour of music, community messages, and a celebration of Salem’s spirit. The station emphasizes that the event is sponsor‑free and purely for community enjoyment.

Free Art Walk – Friday, Sept. 4

Every first Friday of the month, downtown Salem hosts a free art walk from 5‑8 p.m. The walk includes eight stops at galleries and studios, live music, and pop‑up activities. The Hallie Ford Museum of Art also offers extended evening hours at no cost.

Gaiety Hollow Garden Open Day – Saturday, Sept. 5

The historic Gaiety Hollow garden, the former home and studio of landscape architects Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, opens its grounds for free admission. Visitors can enjoy the garden’s spring‑summer blooms and listen to poetry readings by the Mid‑Valley Poetry Society. Donations are welcomed to help maintain the site. The garden is located next to Bush Park at 545 Mission St.
