Sakura Japanese Steakhouse Is Worth Every Theatrical Minute

Most hibachi restaurants follow the same script: the onion volcano, the flying shrimp, the egg joke. Sakura Japanese Steakhouse on East Spring Valley Road does all of that, and somehow it still works. The difference is that the cooks here actually seem to enjoy the performance, which is more than you can say for every place running this format in the DFW suburbs.

Sakura has been on that stretch of Spring Valley near Plano Road for years — long enough that it’s become the default birthday-dinner destination for a good chunk of Richardson. If you’ve lived here more than a year and haven’t been dragged to one of those booths by a coworker or a ten-year-old, you’re the exception. That reputation could make it easy to dismiss. Don’t.

The dining room is split between the hibachi tables — big communal grills where you share a bench with strangers and make friends by necessity — and a quieter sushi bar section up front. The sushi side is worth noting: it doesn’t get as much attention as the main event, but the rolls are competent and fairly priced, and it’s a good option if you want dinner without the spectacle on a Tuesday.

For the hibachi side, go with a group if you can. The experience scales up. Expect to sit with whoever else is celebrating something that evening, and expect the chef assigned to your grill to have a personality. They earn their tips through showmanship as much as cooking. The fried rice alone is a reason to come back — done on the flat-top with butter, egg, and soy, served hot off the grill and dramatically better than the same dish made at home.

What to order: the filet and shrimp combo is the reliable choice, somewhere around $30 to $35 depending on current prices. The chicken is fine but not the reason to come. If you’re a scallop person, order the scallops — they do well on the high heat. Everything comes with the house salad (ginger dressing, do not skip), soup, fried rice, vegetables, and noodles, so the portion situation is never a problem.

Pricing lands in the moderate range — hibachi entrees generally run $25 to $40, which feels fair for a full meal plus the entertainment component. Weekend nights fill up fast; reservations are a good idea, especially if your party is six or more. A Friday at 7 p.m. without a reservation means you’re waiting, possibly a long time, which is less fun than the meal itself.

The room isn’t flashy. Dark wood, paper lanterns, the glow of several grills going at once. It smells like garlic and butter from the parking lot, which is a reasonable quality indicator. Service is efficient in the way it has to be when every table turns over on a schedule around the cooking.

Is it the most sophisticated Japanese food in Richardson? No. Is it the place you go for your nephew’s birthday or a work team dinner or when out-of-town relatives want something interactive? Absolutely. Sakura has found a formula and stuck with it, which in the restaurant business is harder than it sounds. Sometimes knowing exactly what you are is enough.
