Sacred Heart Academy Wins Second Straight Kentucky Field Hockey State Title

In a thrilling showdown at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state championship, the Sacred Heart Academy Valkyries emerged victorious over Christian Academy of Louisville, 3-2. The win secures Sacred Heart’s back‑to‑back state titles and marks the sixth championship for head coach Eleanor Mitchell.

Game Summary

The two programs entered the title game with a familiar rivalry. Last season’s championship saw Sacred Heart defeat the Centurions 3-1, and the teams had already met four times this season, most recently at regionals nine days earlier. Christian Academy was eager for its first win against the Valkyries this year.

Christian Academy struck first when Amelia Ohr netted the opening goal, capitalizing on a loose ball in the opening quarter. Sacred Heart answered quickly; Sarah Beneke tied the game before the quarter ended, converting a pass from Avery Brown.

The Valkyries took the lead in the second quarter when Layla Lococo scored off an assist from Victoria Ostos. The momentum continued in the third period when Mills Webber extended the advantage to 3‑1 with a well‑placed finish.

Christian Academy rallied late, with Ella Hodge pulling the Centurions within one goal in the final minutes. However, Sacred Heart’s defense held firm under pressure, preserving the lead and clinching the championship.

Coach Mitchell’s Perspective

“It’s pretty unreal. Super proud of the girls. We had a great night,” Coach Eleanor Mitchell said after the game. “Christian Academy played a great game. It was a hard‑fought game; we played them five times this season. It’s mentally tough, so I was very happy to come out on top.”

Significance of the Victory

This championship carries added meaning for the Valkyries. The 2026‑27 school year is the final season that high‑school field hockey will be a KHSAA‑sanctioned sport in Kentucky, making this the team’s last opportunity to add a state‑title banner to its legacy.

Coach Mitchell’s sixth title underscores the program’s sustained excellence and provides a fitting farewell to a sport that has long been a staple of Kentucky’s high‑school athletics. The victory also highlights the dedication of the student‑athletes, many of whom balance rigorous academic schedules with demanding training regimens.

Looking Ahead

While the future of high‑school field hockey in Kentucky remains uncertain, the Sacred Heart Academy community plans to celebrate the team’s achievements with a ceremony later this month. Alumni, parents, and local supporters are expected to gather to honor the players and coaching staff for their hard work and sportsmanship.

For now, the Valkyries can relish their historic win, knowing they have left an indelible mark on Kentucky’s high‑school sports landscape.
